The Muriwai Environmental Trust (MET) was established in 2011 with a simple but powerful goal: to care for, protect, and enhance the natural environment of Muriwai and Waimauku. We're a registered charitable trust (CC47215), grounded in local action and community connection.
To restore and protect Muriwai’s coastal cliffs, dunes, and native bush — together.
By working as one, we can ensure these unique and significant ecological areas are preserved and thriving for generations to come.
To bring people together through a shared purpose: caring for the place we all call home. By working collectively, we can create a positive and lasting impact — for our environment, and for our community.
The Muriwai Environmental Trust (MET) was established in 2011 with a clear purpose: to care for, protect, and enhance the environment in the Muriwai and Waimauku area. We are a registered charity (CC47215), led by Richard Wright and supported by a dedicated board of trustees.
Over the past decade, MET has fostered a highly engaged local community while becoming a trusted partner to mana whenua, Auckland Council, and the Department of Conservation. Our work spans across animal and plant pest control, regenerative planting, and community education — all with the aim of protecting and restoring our unique landscape.
But the pressures on Muriwai are growing. With over 1.4 million visitors each year, it is one of the most visited beach in Aotearoa. The impact of 54,000 vehicles on the beach, coupled with the devastation of Cyclone Gabrielle and increased flood risks in recent years, this has placed immense strain on our coastal environment and community.
Now more than ever, our environment needs all of us.
The challenges facing Muriwai are real — from heavy visitor numbers to the lasting impact of Cyclone Gabrielle — but so is the opportunity to make a difference. MET exists to bring our community together around a shared purpose: to restore, protect, and care for the place we call home, now and for future generations.
