The Goldie Halo and Goldie Reserve projects are delivering sustained predator control across the wider Goldie Bush Recreation Reserve and Motutara Settlement Scenic Reserve — two significant ecological areas rich in biodiversity and cultural value.
We work in close partnership with the Department of Conservation and Te Kawerau ā Maki, who hold rangatiratanga and kaitiakitanga over this landscape and its taonga species. Together, we’re working to protect and restore this special ngahere for future generations.
To date, we’ve secured project approvals from 16 priority landowners, covering more than 1,100 hectares. Some landowners actively service traplines themselves, while others support by giving our volunteers access to manage traps on their land.
This partnership approach is building a protective buffer zone around the Reserve, connecting existing efforts in Goldie Bush with those in Muriwai to the north and Te Henga to the south — forming a vital link in the North-West Wildlink.
Our long-term vision is to bring kiwi back to this area. Early conversations are underway with Save the Kiwi to explore what it will take to make that vision a reality.
