On a recent visit to the Southern Bays to check the colony and deliver more traps and nest boxes, our team made an unexpected discovery...
Over the weekend, our penguin team discovered a nesting box completely buried by a mud slip during routine checks. Only a small beak was visible.
Andy, one of our volunteers, noticed the beak poking through the mud and feared the worst. But when he reached down, the bird felt warm — against all odds, it was alive.
We gently washed off the mud and placed the kororā in a safe box nearby. As the team continued digging out the old nest box, they found a second surprise: another penguin, still inside — and also alive. Both birds were reunited and, after several welfare checks this week, appear to be doing well.
We believe they may have been buried for up to five days. It was incredibly lucky we arrived when we did. With a safer home now set up, we’re hopeful they’ll have another go at breeding this season.
