Richard and Andy were lucky enough to attend the NZ Penguin Symposium in Oamaru held every two years - this was by far the largest ever held with lots of penguin experts and community groups coming together to share knowledge and connections. There were over 28 presentations over the 2 days with topics ranging from kororā diet and stress responses, to tawaki (Fiordland Crested Penguins) foraging behaviour, and even covered Emperor Penguins in Antarctica and Humboldt Penguins in South America.
Richard presented a paper on building an AI Camera driven Dog Detection system (as we have had four kororā killed in the past year) and technological advances in around radio communications, AI processing of images on device, and cameras. The presentation was well received and the feedback from groups has encouraged us to continue to develop the system which we hope to provide the plans and models for free for any community group to pick up and use on their patch.
The conference was an incredible experience and we learned a lot that we have been able to bring back to Muriwai to expand our knowledge to help kororā thrive in Muriwai.
